Mun Note: This fic is part of an RP story arc conceived by
lost_la_femme in which John has returned to his own time to try and bring his sister, Sam, back with him. There's an urgent reason for John's trip as he needs Sam's help to save the life of his lover Eve. A great deal of thanks goes to Eve!mun for allowing John to participate in this storyline and to Snake!mun
_call_me_snake_ for playing as well.
After picking up the message disk Sam had left at the Sherry Netherland under the name of the dog the kids had left behind when they had went to Olduvai, John managed to buy a used reader and access the disk. Sitting on a bench in Central Park, he listened to his sister's voice for the first time in a year and a half.
"Johnny, if you're reading this then something has gone wrong and you're back where we started. I've been running from UAC pretty much from the moment you left. I'm leaving this to help you find me. I'll head for Uncle Max's, but I'm pretty sure they're going to track me there. I'll stay just long enough to leave you another message...you know where." Sam’s image sighed and brushed the hair back from her face. "I love you, Johnny and frankly as much as I miss you, I hope for your sake you never get this message. If you do, stay safe, trust no one and follow the breadcrumbs, little brother. I'll be waiting at the end of the trail."
The screen went dark as the message ended. Yeah he knew just where Sam would leave her next message; one place UAC couldn't know about, even if they interrogated Uncle Max with every drug in their pharmacopoeia; the rock cairn by the old mill where Uncle Max had buried the dog, Felix Rollo. The name she'd left the disk under at the hotel had been all the clue he'd needed. Unbeknownst to Max, he and Sam had buried their mother's small metal jewelry box containing Mom and Dad's wedding rings there, as soon as she said ‘you know where’ he’d immediately thought of the box.
It took him three weeks to make his way across the zone borders between New York and Montana to Uncle Max's farm and another three days before he was as sure as he could be that no one was watching the place. The house was deserted and the smell from the barn told him that there was something dead and rotting inside. Carefully making his way in, watching for surveillance traps, he found the horses and the cow laying in their stalls. From the looks of it, the corpses had been there at least a month if not longer.
UAC's enforcement squad had definitely been here and he wondered if they'd found Sam as well as Uncle Max. They must have come without warning, probably at night. The jackbooted bastards wouldn't have given a damn even if Max asked for the chance to let the animals loose to fend for themselves in the pasture.
Leaving the deserted farm buildings behind, John made his way to the old mill, quickly finding the box hidden under the top layer of stones on Rollo's grave, exactly where he and Sam had placed it. The tarnished container had a smear of blood on the catch and inside the lid and he sniffed it, catching the scent of his twin. "Sam." He whispered. "Please don't be dead." Or worse yet, in the hands of the UAC. He didn't think she was though, not even his stubborn twin could have withstood those bastards and their drugs. She would have given up everything and the box wouldn't be here, either that or it would have been booby trapped with a gas canister to knock him out so they could capture him.
Tucking the box into his coat pocket, he left the farm and headed up into the mountains, hoping the old hunting cabin was still standing so he'd have a place to go to ground. Eight hours later, he found the cabin deserted but undisturbed. After scouting the area, he settled in, using thermal blankets stored under the bed to keep warm, not daring the smoke from a fire in the ancient woodstove giving away his position. Settling in he pulled out the box and found a disk in the lining. Sliding it in, he smiled a little bitterly at his sister's image, a fresh cut over her eye.
"Well if you made it this far then you know they've taken Uncle Max. I risked a walk over to the Anderson's and Becky said they found the place deserted and the horses dead yesterday when Max didn't come over for the dinner they'd agreed on last month. Tom said somebody in town said they saw two troop transports three weeks ago, moving through around dawn. They offered to hide me there, but things are too hot for me to stay and risk them as well. I'm heading on to the West, if you are close enough behind me, I'll be trying to cross to Free West Island at the Reno Fissure." She looked off to the side as though hearing something, then turned back to the screen. "Be careful, Johnny. The bastards are everywhere." The screen went to black.
Reno Fissure, the quickest way to Free West. The Big One of 2015 had finally split the western states of the old US off from the mainland and after the so called Great Liberation of 2020 that had brought down the old US, the new island had become a haven for free thinkers, anarchists and the only place, outside of the Third World, the corporations didn't hold complete control. Free West was the best place for someone on the run from UAC to hide and he and Sam had fled there before finding out about the time travel program, hiding for almost a year. If she could make it across, Sam would be with their friends there safe and sound, but the crossing was well patrolled on this side.
Given that the animals had been dead about a month then he'd only missed Sam by a week, she may still be on this side of the border and he knew exactly who she would go to first for a way across. He had to get to Reno as fast as possible and the best way to do that was to catch a ride on the refugee train that ran through Billings. He'd need papers to board the train and that would take too long. Jumping the train as it slowed to make its way up the grade at Far Run Pass however would take no papers, but a lot of luck.
Gathering what supplies he could scrounge from the cabin, he stowed them in an old pack he found under the bed box, shouldered it and headed out. The sooner he found Sam, the sooner he could get them both out of this hell and back to the past to save the life of the woman he loved.
