Author's Note: For prompt responses I'll be playing John as a mixture of movie canon and my own take on what happened after the movie. In RP he'll be strictly post movie.

I guess in a way I've been reborn. In the ARK complex in Nevada, Samantha injected me with chromosome24 as I was dying. Big bad Marine going down for the count and it wasn't the damned mutants that got me. It was a malfunctioning nano-wall and a ricochet from my own weapon. Caught me right under my vest and it hurt like hell, but I managed to get Samantha to a storeroom before my legs decided to quit working.

When she realized just how bad I was hit, she started to give me the shot. I tried to argue with her, scared that I'd turn. That I was no better than the mass murderer Carmack had used in his experiments. That I would turn into one of them and end up killing Sam. Sweet, wonderful Sam, my twin, my best friend and I'd be ripping her apart like a fucking monster.

I know you, John, you're my brother. You won't turn, you don't have it in you. I told her she didn't know me, but she wouldn't listen and I was too tired and cold to argue anymore. I could feel myself slipping away; feel my heartbeat slowing as she slid the needle in. I tried to tell her I was sorry, sorry that I let her down, sorry that I hadn't stayed in touch, sorry that I hadn't saved her.

I was a goner and soon they'd break through the door and she would be too. As things started to go black, I prayed that she'd be dead before I turned; I knew that when I woke up, it wouldn't be me and I'd kill the first thing I saw. I handed her my sidearm and told her if I started to turn shoot me once in the head, once in the heart. I tried to tell her to take my gun and get out, get to the surface and drop an ST grenade down the elevator shaft. Bury all of us damned souls beneath the dessert for eternity and forget.

When I woke I was alone, but I could hear things moving outside the door. I stood and looked in the mirror. There was blood on my face, but it didn't hurt. I reached up and wiped it away and my skin was intact, no cut no nothing.

I flashed back to what Sam had told me about the species whose remains they'd uncovered in Olduvai. They weren't human, they were superhuman. Super strong, super fast, super intelligent. Their cells divided 50% percent faster than ours, which means they healed almost instantly. I hadn't turned into one of the creatures, I had become goddamned Superman. Reaching for the wound in my gut, I felt smooth skin under the hole in my battle gear.

I was reborn, but I wasn't human anymore, at least not on the inside.
